A Pelvis/Gynaecology Ultrasound for women looks at the female organs within the Pelvis.
What is the Menopause?
Put simply, the menopause is when your ovaries stop producing a hormone called oestrogen and you no longer release eggs so you stop having periods. This usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55. For a small number of women menopause occurs earlier. If it happens before you are 40 it’s called premature menopause (or premature ovarian insufficiency).
There is no exact length of time over which your periods to stop. It could be a few months or several years – your periods may become less regular as your oestrogen levels fall and this time is called peri-menopause
Women of child bearing age are often referred to as ‘pre-menopausal’.

Post-menopausal women do not have periods. If you have not had a period for 12 months or more, you are considered to be post-menopausal.

Any of the symptoms above will be treated seriously by your doctor and they will send you for an Ultrasound to look for tumours.
The sonographer will frequently be able to discuss the results with you on the day. However, a formal report will be issued within 24 hours which will include recommendations for follow up tests if required. The report will be sent to your GP or Consultant. Images can be requested via our PACS system if referred to a hospital.
The uses for Ultrasound are ever expanding within medicine. It is accepted as a non – invasive, cost-effective diagnostic modality. Ultrasound does not cause pain, there is no ionising radiation and is more affordable for patients compared with CT and MR. Often appointment lengths are also shorter, with no recovery period after the exam, leaving patients to continue with their day after the exam.
